Fortnite Series 1
v1.2, 2026-09-17. Integrates six research briefs (Sep 15–16), 105 reviewer-verified eBay listings, PSA population data, PSA's own Auction Prices Realized (APR) feed pulled Sep 16, and the print-run investigation. Numbers are USD; "verified" means the listing was manually reviewed. This is a market read for collectors comparing notes, not investment advice.
The one-paragraph version
Fortnite Series 1 is a 300-card set from 2019 with one grail (Black Knight #252), three parallels (Base, Holofoil, Crystal Shard), and three print runs (USA, Italy, Brazil) that the market prices as different assets. In August 2026 every USA-print line re-rated 2–3x in about two weeks, on thin volume, with volume leading price by 3–8 days. Supply is effectively frozen (grading has collapsed to ~28 cards a week). The long-game thesis — that everyone who has played Fortnite since 2017 pays up for vintage Fortnite in the 2030s and 2040s, with cards as one vehicle and characters leading — has a real precedent (Pokémon) and a real counter-example (Halo), and the honest read is that it holds for a narrow character-led tier, not the set. Separately, near-term pops here are attention-driven and detectable: volume led price by days, and the retrace is the base case — a trade, not a hold. The USA premium over Italy is mostly the PSA label and home-market bias, not documented scarcity, which means it is durable but not a convergence trade. The cleanest expressions: USA Black Knight Holofoil in high grade (scarcest object nobody is pricing), sealed boxes as the liquid low-variance way to hold the category, and — for a contrarian — the Italy Holofoil PSA 10 with a population of three.
1. What the set is (and the traps)
- 300 cards. Commons #1–100 are filler. Every card #101–300 exists in exactly three forms: Base, Holofoil (~1 per 24-pack hobby box), Crystal Shard (2 per Mega Box, nowhere else). "Crystal Shard" and "Cracked Ice" are the same parallel — Panini's name vs. the hobby's.
- Black Knight #252 (Legendary) is the grail; Skull Trooper, Omega, Drift, Raven, Peely are the supporting cast. Renegade Raider, Ice King and Reaper are not in Series 1 despite what listings say.
- Three prints. USA (Panini-logo shrink, seamless shard pattern), Italy (plain film, tiled shard pattern), Brazil (tiled). Early PSA slabs don't say "Italy" on the label. Aggregators blend the prints and were wrong by 2–3x on this set in September 2026. Any comp that doesn't say which print is noise.
2. What just happened (verified)
| USA-print line | Early Aug 2026 | Latest verified | Move |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hobby box, sealed | $205–370 | $810 (Sep 11); $1,008 auction; $1,250 accepted | ~2.5x |
| Mega box, sealed | $799–931 | $2,367–2,498 (Aug 20–21) | ~2.7x |
| Black Knight base PSA 10 | $455–680 | $1,300 (Sep 4); $2,000–2,500 late Aug | ~2.5x |
| Black Knight Holofoil PSA 9 | $536 (Jan) → $1,000 (Jul) | $3,000 accepted (Sep 2) | ~6x YTD |
| Black Knight Holofoil PSA 10 | $7,103 (Sep 2024) → $4,100 (Feb 2025, last public sale) | none in the 2026 run-up | ceiling untested |
| Black Knight Crystal Shard PSA 9 | — | $9,877 (Jul 28, 153 bids) | only USA shard sale in 90 days |
| Black Knight Crystal Shard PSA 10 | $15,190 (Mar 2025) · $17,271 (May 2025) — the only two PSA-recorded sales | $100,000 private sale (Aug 26) [reported, unverified; ~6x the last public print] | — |
Shape of the move. Hobby-box sales frequency doubled Aug 12–16 before the first $599 sale printed on Aug 16; prices had doubled again by Aug 29. Same pattern on base Black Knight a week later. Volume led price by 3–8 days. The catalyst we can date is the reported $100k shard sale on Aug 26, which was amplified on X within 48 hours — but boxes were already moving two weeks earlier, so the sale was fuel, not the spark. PSA's own sales feed puts that number in context: the only two Crystal Shard USA PSA 10 sales it has ever recorded are $15,190 and $17,271 (both eBay auctions, spring 2025). A $100k print would be roughly 6x the last public one, and nothing at that level has surfaced in any public venue since. Same feed on the Holofoil: the USA PSA 10 last sold publicly at $4,100 (Feb 2025, down from $7,103 in Sep 2024, and from $30,000 at the 2021 peak) — the 2026 momentum in that card is entirely in the PSA 9.
Quality of the move. Thin. The whole USA hobby-box series is 16 sales in six weeks; the Mega box is 9; the graded Black Knight lines are single digits. Inside that we found shill ladders (a $5,000 Mega box sale followed by an identical relist at $50,000), a refunded-and-relisted shard, a 1-bid $249.99 "sale" re-run at $1,300 a week later, and Best-Offer prices that overstate what changed hands (one verified purchase: $300 shown, $150 paid). After review, 69 of 105 listings were usable. A market this thin can retrace as fast as it rose.
3. Supply
- Set-wide PSA: 31,313 graded, 10,053 PSA 10s, gem rate flat at 32% since 2022. Grading ran ~1,000/month in 2023; it is now ~28/week, 13 cards in the last 30 days. Nobody is cracking wax. The population you see is close to the population there will be.
- Black Knight, PSA (graded / PSA 10): USA base 673 / 111 · USA Holofoil 214 / 20 · USA Crystal Shard 45 / 9 · Italy base 213 / 44 · Italy Holofoil 89 / 3 · Italy Crystal Shard 167 / 39.
- Gem rates: the holofoil surface is the grade-killer (USA holo 9.3% for Black Knight; Italy holo 3.4%). Shards gem better than base set-wide (40% vs 37%).
- The USA Crystal Shard Black Knight went from 39 graded / 10 tens in May 2023 to 45 / 9 today — six submissions in 28 months. That tier is done growing.
4. The long-game thesis, tested
The claim, stated carefully. Not "kids who played in 2017–19 will buy these cards in 20 years." Rather: people who have played Fortnite at any point from 2017 to now — a cohort that is still being refreshed — will, with adult income in the 2030s and 2040s, pay up for vintage Fortnite: the IP of their childhood, in whatever forms exist. Trading cards are one of those forms, not the whole thesis. Kids under 15 today are not collecting Series 1; they are playing the game and living inside the IP. When they have money, the spend attaches to the IP — skins, accounts, physical objects, digital objects that don't exist yet — and cards capture a slice. That is a generational difference from the junk-wax era, where the card was the asset. Within that slice, characters lead: Black Knight will lead whether the money goes into cardboard, accounts, or something not invented yet.
For: - The nostalgia already exists and already has a price. Fortnite's biggest day ever was the OG season in November 2023 (44.7M players) — a throwback event. Accounts carrying the Black Knight skin (Season 2 Battle Pass, never re-released) sell for $600–1,800 more than accounts without it. The market already treats Chapter 1 exclusivity as "first edition," and it's doing so in a non-card vehicle — which is exactly what the IP-first version of the thesis predicts. Black Knight is the consensus Charizard of Fortnite, and Series 1 is the only card set that contains him from that era. - The cohort keeps refreshing. Pokémon's Charizard bid needed a pipeline of new kids for 25 years; Fortnite still ships to new kids every season. The pipeline is thinner than it was (see against) but it hasn't stopped. - The card license went dormant after Series 3 (2021). Series 1 is the fixed rookie set; no reprint risk, no new product diluting it. - Disney's $1.5B stake (2024) and the LEGO/Sony money make Fortnite a platform that will exist in 2040, not a fad.
Against: - The IP-first framing cuts both ways. If the nostalgia spend goes mostly to digital and IP vehicles, cards get a smaller share than the Pokémon analogy implies. Charizard's kids had one vehicle; Fortnite's kids have many. - The pipeline is weakening. Engagement peaked 2023–24; 2026 daily averages are down ~40% year over year; Epic cut 1,000+ jobs in March 2026 and closed three modes. Still shipping, but to fewer kids. - 2007 Topps Halo is the sobering analog. A beloved, still-living franchise whose 2007 card set never developed a graded market — a complete base set lists for ~$300 nineteen years later. Franchise survival is necessary, not sufficient. Video-game cards have a base case near zero. - Cohort math. The 2018 player base skewed 18–24 among adults with a large under-18 share. The oldest of that cohort are 25–34 now — the bid, if it comes, may arrive earlier than the Pokémon timeline and against a thinner franchise moment.
Verdict: directionally supportable for the USA Black Knight tier only — Crystal Shard first, Holofoil second — as a character-led slice of an IP-nostalgia thesis. The broad set carries Halo risk. Concentrate, don't diversify, inside this set.
And a second, separate thesis lives in the same data. Near-term pops in non-sports cards are attention-driven, not fundamentals-driven: money goes where influencers collectively point. That makes the timing of pops detectable — volume led price by 3–8 days here, and by 13 days on the Lombard Jr. catalyst pop — and it makes the retrace the base case. The trading version of the thesis is: buy when a trend is possible (Heating), sell into the top, and always expect the give-back. The 20-year character-grail hold and the weeks-long attention trade are both legitimate. They run on different clocks and should be sized and judged differently.
5. The print question: why USA costs 4–50x more, and whether that lasts
- Nobody knows the print runs. No Panini statement, sell sheet, or allocation exists for any print. "USA is the short print" is community inference.
- USA base shipped first (June 2019), but USA shards came only in the Target Mega Box dated November 2019. Italy Megas and tins were on sale by summer 2019. For the grails specifically, Italy may have been first. The "first edition" story is weak.
- The only documented physical difference is the shard pattern. Card stock, foil, the "corner flaw" — all unverified lore. PSA has handed out more Black Knight shard 10s to Italy than to USA.
- The spread lives in the label. Sealed boxes — identical expected contents — trade at 2–4x USA over Italy. Graded singles trade at 18x (PSA 10 shard) to 200x (SGC 10). If scarcity drove it, boxes would carry the same multiple. They don't. What drives it is PSA printing "-Italy" on the flip plus US home-market bias.
- Every analog says label spreads persist or widen. Japanese vs English Pokémon (Japanese was first and better made; still ~10x cheaper 25 years later), 1st Edition vs Unlimited, GPK UK minis. No compression has ever been observed on Fortnite.
What that means: the USA premium is durable, but it is not scarcity you're paying for. Buying Italy expecting convergence is a low-probability trade. Buying Italy as a discounted way to hold category exposure is reasonable — the box spread is already narrow.
6. Rip or hold — the box math
Pull odds from the set structure (Panini's stated ratios); gem odds from PSA populations (which are "of cards submitted," so slightly generous for a random pull); values from verified comps.
| USA hobby box (~$810) | Italy hobby box (~$225) | USA Mega box (~$2,400) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black Knight base per box | 3.96% (2 Legendaries, 50 in set) | 3.96% | — |
| Black Knight holo per box | 0.5% | 0.5% | — |
| Black Knight shard per box | — | — | 1.0% (2 shards, 200 cards) |
| P(PSA 10 if pulled) | 16.5% base · 9.3% holo | 20.7% base · 3.4% holo | 20% shard |
| BK PSA 10 per box | 1 in 153 | 1 in 122 | 1 in 500 |
| Expected graded value / box | ~$60 | ~$35 | ~$1,000 (random shards gem ~40%; non-key PSA 10s sell $600–2,000) |
| Verdict | Hold sealed | Hold sealed | Hold — was roughly break-even to rip at $900 in early August; the market closed that gap in two weeks |
Eight Italy boxes give a 27.6% chance of at least one base Black Knight and a 6.4% chance of at least one PSA 10. The boxes are worth far more sealed than opened.
7. Positioning, by tier
| Tier | What it is | Read |
|---|---|---|
| Grail — USA Black Knight Crystal Shard PSA 9/10 | 9 tens, 17 nines. One public USA sale in 90 days ($9,877, PSA 9). PSA 10: last public sales $15,190 / $17,271 (2025); asks $100k. | The thesis card. Illiquid, headline-driven, and the $100k print is unverified — the public record tops out at $17k. Entry only on a public auction, never on an ask. |
| Under-observed — USA Black Knight Holofoil PSA 9/10 | 20 tens (hardest to gem at 9%), 99 nines. PSA 9 went $536 → $3,000 this year; no PSA 10 sale since $4,100 in Feb 2025 (was $7,103 in Sep 2024, $30,000 at the 2021 peak); BGS 9.5 $4,000. A PSA 9 at $3,000 against a PSA 10 last printed at $4,100 is the compression to watch. | Scarcer than base by 5x in high grade, cheaper than the shard by 3–10x, and the top of the range is undiscovered. Best risk-adjusted expression of "nostalgia concentrates in the scarce parallel." |
| Liquid — USA Black Knight base PSA 10 | 111 tens. $455 → $1,300–2,500 in six weeks. | Fine liquid exposure; not scarce. The line most likely to retrace if August fades. |
| Category beta — sealed hobby boxes | USA ~$810; Italy ~$225 (US-located). | The low-variance way to hold the set. USA carries the label premium; Italy carries the same expected contents at a quarter of the price. Hold sealed; never rip. |
| Contrarian — Italy Black Knight Holofoil PSA 10 | Population 3 (vs 20 USA). Priced like the label (~$500–800 implied). | The one place pop-scarcity and label-discount point in opposite directions. If the label ever loses salience, this is the card that re-rates hardest. Small, patient, and cheap to be wrong. |
| Avoid — broad set, Brazil, raw | Peely/Skull Trooper/Omega holos; Brazil anything; raw cards sold as "PSA 10 candidates". | Halo risk, illiquidity, and junk-listing exposure with no thesis payoff. |
8. Risks
- Retrace. August was thin volume with shill activity mixed in. A market that went 2.5x in two weeks can give half back in two weeks. Watch the USA hobby box: a sale below ~$600 with rising volume would mark the turn.
- The $100k sale. Private, brokered, unverified, and ~6x the last public PSA 10 shard print ($17,271, May 2025). If it never shows up in a public venue, the grail tier's new ceiling is a rumor.
- Franchise fade. Fortnite engagement is falling in 2026. The Disney November 2026 launch is the next test; a flop weakens the pipeline argument further.
- Label change. If PSA ever stops distinguishing prints (unlikely) or if unlabeled early Italy slabs surface in volume, USA premiums compress and Italy re-rates.
- Halo outcome. The base case for video-game cards is nothing. This thesis is a bet that Fortnite is the exception; size it that way.
9. What would change this read
- More bullish: a public auction PSA 10 USA shard above $50k; a USA Holofoil PSA 10 sale above $4,100 (the Feb 2025 print is the ceiling to beat); grading volume picking back up (new money entering); Italy boxes following USA up with a lag (category spillover confirmed).
- More bearish: USA hobby box back under $600 on volume; the $100k sale never surfacing publicly; Fortnite's Disney launch underperforming; a second Italy Mega printing being confirmed.
